After successfully delivering the lifesaving Xenoderm to New Paradise, the Starship Midway is recalled to Earth by Admiral Nogura, Chief of Star Fleet Operations. A colony near the site of the Starship Defiant's disappearance has destabilized, turning its population to dust.

Star Fleet fears the nearby interphase rift is destabilizing again, and only the Midway can confront the growing threat.
