Captain Faust's upbringing was marked by the challenges of having a parent in the space service. In his early years, his father, George's duties as a Starfleet Surgeon often left him with an inconsistent presence at home. He is rather close to his mother, Anna. As a boy Tristan had to navigate growing up without a consistent male role model and longed for more time with his Dad. This situation changed as he grew into his teen years. George had been promoted to command rank and accepted a position at Starfleet Medical. This change brought them closer, and Tristan finally had the chance to spend more quality time with his father.
Tristan followed an unorthodox path to the center chair. Although following in his father’s footsteps by joining the service, he entered the academy in the sciences division due to his dual interest in stellar cartography and the emerging deutronic computer systems.
During most of his academy career the Federation was embroiled in the Four Years War with the Klingons. After his freshman year (2255), Starfleet pressed the midshipmen into service to fill its personnel shortages. As more experienced crews cycled into newer ships such as the Ares-class, Tristan was assigned to the Anton-class U.S.S. Plato (NCC-1416) as the ship’s science officer. During this time is where he met Joseph Amato, a fellow midshipman. The two would become friends and Tristan would later select Joseph's younger brother Michael to serve aboard the Midway.
The Four Years War ended in mid 2256, which allowed him to finish his studies at the academy. He graduated in 2258, rated at a Lieutenant Junior Grade and was assigned to the U.S.S. Ticonderoga, an Ares-class ship
Captain Anderson, impressed with the young lieutenant, presented him with the opportunity to advance to full lieutenant during his second year of service on the Ticonderoga. The Captain transferred him to navigation which he was a natural fit. Soon after being assigned as the ship’s chief navigator he was promoted to full lieutenant. In 2258, the Ticonderoga encountered a sleeper ship derelict in space. During an away mission to the abandoned ship, Tristan opened the only functioning sleeper pod where he found a man around his age. The ship was of an extremely advanced design and the computer was completely blank. The only thing known about the man was his name due to the cryptic label on his sleeper pod which read Ty-Yak Tay-ata R-yah Novo. For the next few weeks Tristan got to know Novo and took it upon himself to help guide him through his new life. Novo had no relocation of his previous life. Following several years of re-education Novo successfully entered Starfleet Academy in 2260 with the assistance of Captain Anderson and Lt. Faust.
Following his four year stint on the Ticonderoga, Tristan accepted a position as Chief Navigator and Second Officer onboard the U.S.S. Republic, a Constitution Class starship serving under Captain Robert A. Fletcher. Following his assignment, he was promoted to Commander and chosen by Captain Anderson to be his next Executive Officer, allowing for his return to the Ticonderoga.
After his successful four-year tenure as the Ticonderoga’s executive officer, Tristan's ambition to command a starship became a reality when he was chosen to be the first captain of the U.S.S. Midway, which officially launched on May 21, 2268. In assembling his senior staff, Tristan turned to his godfather, Dr. Marc Kitchner to serve as ship’s surgeon. Marc had been Tristan’s father's closest friend since their days in med school. Despite Dr. Kitchner's retirement from active duty, serving as the chief of staff at Walter Reed Medical Center in Maryland, he accepted the call to serve as the ship's chief surgeon. Tristan enlisted the expertise of his old friend Novo, who was now the yard project manager for the Midway. Novo's technical prowess and familiarity with the ship's systems made him a perfect fit for the role of chief engineer. One last addition to the crew hit close to home for Tristan, enlisting Michael Amato as the ship’s surgical resident. Mike was the younger brother of Tristan’s best friend, Joseph Amato who had recently gone missing when the U.S.S. Defiant disappeared. Tristan offered this role as an opportunity to Mike to discover what had happened to his brother.
The Midway's shakedown cruise ended abruptly as the ship was forced to respond to a Federation distress call, only to be ensnared in a cunning trap orchestrated by the Orion Pirate Captain Arriana D'Tal. The ship was overrun, and several members of the crew were abducted. The determination of the crew and the assistance of the enigmatic ally Alcibiades Xod were pivotal in executing a daring rescue operation, rescuing the hostages from the clutches of the pirates.
During the ship's maiden voyage to transport Federation Diplomat St. John Talbot to Nimbus III, known as the "Planet of Galactic Peace," the Midway fell victim to sabotage. The warp drive was maliciously set to overload, but Tristan's quick thinking and the collaboration of the bridge crew averted catastrophe. Injured during the ship’s emergency stop, Commander Heartfilia was forced to take command during the ensuing crisis in the form of an unexpected Romulan attack.
Lt. Miyake, the chief of security, led an investigation which unveiled Novo as the culprit behind the sabotage. However, a subsequent mind meld performed by Ensign S’Tare exposed a deeper truth - Novo had been brainwashed and conditioned by the Orions and Romulans after they kidnapped him from a disreputable spa on Starbase 10. Novo's troubled past, including experimentation with quack treatments and mind-altering substances, made him vulnerable to manipulation. The Midway eventually reached Nimbus III completing its mission but quickly was recalled to Starbase 10 to deal with the situation around Novo. With the recommendations of Dr. Kitchner and himself, along with the approval of Commodore Anderson, Novo was deactivated from Starfleet and put on extended medical leave so he could hopefully received the mental health treatment he needed.
The Midway’s return to Starbase 10 was brief as the ship was tasked with an assignment Tristan had been waiting for… to investigate the disappearance of the U.S.S. Defiant and his friend Joseph Amato. |
