The U.S.S. Midway (NCC-1743) maintains the legacy of the original United States Aircraft Carrier (CV-41) which was named after the Battle of Midway which occured in 1942 during World War II. The battle was described by Historian John Keegan as "the most stunning and decisive blow in the history of naval warfare." The original U.S.S. Midway, commissioned 8 days after the end of the war served in the United States Navy for 47 years, making her the longest serving carrier of the 20th century. She was the largest ship in the world until 1955. She served as the flagship for Operation Desert Storm before being decommissioned in 1992. She is still open to the public as a museum ship to this day in San Diego, California.

Midway (NCC-1743) one of the final Constitution-class starships to be launched in its third (2266-2270) configurations under the Command of Captain Tristan Faust. Launched six months early due to the loss of the U.S.S. Defiant under unknown circumstances, the Midway was set to operate out of the "Triangle" region of space and to supplement Starfleet's presence along the Klingon Border.
