The U.S.S. Midway (NCC-1743) maintains the legacy of the original United States Aircraft Carrier (CV-41) which was named after the Battle of Midway which occured in 1942 during World War II. The battle was described by Historian John Keegan as "the most stunning and decisive blow in the history of naval warfare." The original U.S.S. Midway, commissioned 8 days after the end of the war served in the United States Navy for 47 years, making her the longest serving carrier of the 20th century. She was the largest ship in the world until 1955. She served as the flagship for Operation Desert Storm before being decommissioned in 1992. She is still open to the public as a museum ship to this day in San Diego, California.

It was back in the early eighties, at the height of the boat people. And the sailor was hard at work on the carrier Midway, which was patrolling the South China Sea. The sailor, like most American servicemen, was young, smart, and fiercely observant. The crew spied on the horizon a leaky little boat. And crammed inside were refugees from Indochina hoping to get to America. The Midway sent a small launch to bring them to the ship and safety. As the refugees made their way through the choppy seas, one spied the sailor on deck, and stood up, and called out to him. He yelled, ``Hello, American sailor. Hello, freedom man.'' - President Reagan, Farewell Address to the Nation, January 11, 1989.

The third ship and second starship to bear the name is the current U.S.S. Midway (NCC-1743) one of the final Constitution-class starships to be launched in its third (2266-2270) configurations under the Command of Captain Tristan Faust. Launched six months early due to the loss of the U.S.S. Defiant under unknown circumstances, the Midway was set to operate out of the "Triangle" region of space and to supplement Starfleet's presence along the Klingon Border.
