535 words; about a 3 minute read

Mission: Mission 1: A Fool’s Errand
Location: Deck 5: Captain's Quarters
Timeline: M1 MD06 (2268.21.05) 1300

With the Midway successfully underway on her planned shakedown cruise to Andor and back, Tristan took the opportunity to go lay down in his cabin. Being the Captain of a starship meant being on call 24/7 so taking a few minutes here and there helped take the edge off. He flicked a piece of fuzz off of his gold colored uniform tunic before hanging it up in the wardrobe. He picked a tape off of his wood veneered desk and loaded it into the computer terminal. The annoying sultry voice started to speaker through speaker: "A Brief History of the Andorian Clans, Section 15: Rituals and Customs..."

Tristan laid down onto the bed for approximately five seconds before the door chime sounded. He sighed, sat up and tapped the computer. "Come on in," he said in a slightly annoyed tone.

The door opened and Lieutenant Michael Amato, the ship's surgical resident walked in.

"Oh, hey Mikey, what can I do for you?" Tristan asked.

"I hope I'm not disturbing you sir," Mike responded.

"Not at all, come in and have a seat," Tristan said as he stood up. Tristan and Mike's brother, Joseph had gone to the academy together and knew each other rather well. To successfully crew the Midway he called in as many favors and connections as he could. "What's on your mind? I can see something's up," he said.

"That obvious?" The young man asked as he sat down in the Burke chair across from Tristan.

"It's written all over your face," Tristan responded.

Mike let out a deep sigh, "Frankly I'm wondering if accepting this posting was a mistake, if I'm ready for a deep space assignment."

Tristan looked at the young man for a moment before saying, "Remember what I said when I asked you to sign on? That it wouldn't be the easiest asignment in Starfleet, but it could be one of the most rewarding... And I also mentioned our first assignment would most likely be to further investigate the Defiant's disapearence."

Mike's eyes widened and nodded. Tristan brought up the main reason for him signing on and it wasn't loyalty to a friend or the sense of adventure. Joseph was on the Defiant during her last mission. Although catalogued among the dead by the Enterprise's landing party, there where still plenty of unanswered questions such as where the Defiant was now.

"I know something that will help," the Captain said, standing up. He walked over to one of the cabinets along the wall, opened it and produced a bottle of gin and a martini shaker.

"On duty?" Mike asked, surprised.

"Hey, you're a doctor... Only for medicinal purposes," Tristan smirked as he started to mix up the beveraged, "Besides, with how this week has been for everyone?"

Mike sighed, "Yeah, I suppose so," he responded.

Tristan poured the mixture into two martini glasses, "Cheers," he said, picking up a glass.

"Cheers," Mike responded. The Captain was right, of course. Still this assignment was daunting for the young doctor expecting either shore or starbase duty.
