Mission 5: The Price of Paradise

The desk by the far wall and put a screen in front of it to keep it from view. Then in the centre of the room she had two black leather couches with a low table between them. On the couches were warm throw rugs and a couple of comfy pillows. She had set up a sideboard where she placed a coffee maker and cups.
Her next client was the head of communications, a Trill which was unique. She figured once she had done prelims with all the crew, she could narrow down on the issues and if there were none, then the yearly review would suffice for those who met the no issue requirements. However if they did have issues then they would have to work that out.
Aze walked down a corridor she didn't think she had been down before, which seemed unlikely as she did a full explore of the ship when she originally came aboard. She arrived outside the Counsellor's door. Pausing for a second or two she finally pressed the door chime.
Parker opened the door with a bright friendly smile. "Ah Lieutenant Vox, welcome please come in!" She beamed. "Can I get you Coffee? Tea?" She waved the woman in and towards the couches.
"Hello" Aze replied as she followed the directions towards a very comfortable looking couch. "Coffee would be great, thanks. " She added, taking a seat. "No sugar, just milk. " Aze added, making herself comfortable.
Parker nodded and briskly served the fresh coffee to the Lieutenant. "Thank you for taking the time today Lieutenant" She said as she placed the mug before Vox.
Taking the mug, smelling the aroma of fresh coffee.." Thank you. It's no trouble really. " She replied, taking a sip. "So, how does this work?" She asked.
"Well normally you speak, speak of whatever you want, and if you have any issues. I listen, help you talk it through."
"Oh, I see, well there is one thing that does bother me from time to time and that's being the only Trill on-board. I knew this might be an issue when I joined Starfleet considering how rare my species is in Starfleet at present but joining Starfleet was something I passionately wanted to do. So being the only Trill, it can feel lonely sometimes and the Trill menu options on the food synthesisers are limited. I often listen to Trill music in my quarters which helps for a while until I'm feeling a tiny bit homesick."
Parker nodded. Being isolated from one's people could be a definite issue. "Your race, being so new to Starfleet, not much is known. What can you tell me about Trill?"
"How long is our session? " Aze asked with a smile. 'Not unlike Earth in many ways but has her unique plant and animal life found only on Trill. Described as quite beautiful not just by her people but those who have visited. What else would you like to know? " She asked.
"Whatever you wish to tell me" Came the calm reply. "And our session can be as long as needed." Parker smiled.
"Well, there is something I would like to talk about. Something different to my homeworld and more closer to home. I think I have met someone I like in terms of having a relationship with them. We have arranged to have a first date of sorts next week. I am just conscious of any regulations about dating amongst the ranks aboard a starship. Especially when I am higher rank than him."
"Are you in the same department?" Parker asked curiously. "And if not are you in a position to influence his team lead?"
"I am the team lead for Communications and he is part of Operations, specifically, navigation. I am not sure what you mean by influence his team lead."
"For some its not the fact that you outrank him. If they believe you will influence your partners chance of promotion.. rightly or wrongly it may get rough. There are forms you complete when you enter into relationships with junior crew."
"Obviously I wouldn't wish to influence or affect his chances of promotion in anyway. His opportunities for promotion should be from his own merits. Would I need to fill in such forms before a first date or from the point at which its clear things are likely to progress?" Aze asked.
"When its clear. just dinner is not considered dating really. If it escalates to what humans call 'going steady' then the forms will need to be lodged. It protects you both."
"That makes sense. I guess I will see how things go. If things start to, as you put it, go steady, the forms are the least of my worries. Mainly, the parents. " Aze replied.
Parker smiled. "Meet the parents? That normally does not happen for a few months."
"Not the meeting, but the fact that I am not human. Sadly, there are still the odd people in societies in the Federation who can be somewhat anti-interspecies relationships. So it is something that the back of my mind." Aze frowned slightly.
"If you get to that point, and the person is someone you want to spend your life with, and can see it, and they are in agreeance, I am sure parents are a hurdle you will be able to overcome." Parker reassured her. "And most people in the fleet come from families who embrace such things, because they would not be in the fleet otherwise."
"It is, after all, what the Federation is built on. Mutual understanding and co-operation. One of the reasons I chose to join Starfleet, that and to get out into space and see what was out there. I had already made a headway into that before I was selected for joining and as a result, through Vox, I have the memories and experiences of my first host and his encounters with other races and places. Personally I have not been to Earth, but I have memories of being there, especially Paris, France. "
"Paris is lovely. Maybe next time we have shore leave, you should go and revisit your memories." Parker suggested.
"Absolutely. I might brush up on my French. " Aze replied.
Parker smiled. "The computer has several programs if you wish to look into it."
"Of course. I'm not sure when I will get the opportunity to go to Earth, though. Plenty of things are happening at the moment, so my place is here aboard the Midway." She replied.
"And you are enjoying your assignment?" Parker asked curiously.
"I am. This ship and her crew are exciting. It's also the responsibility of a host to give their symbiont a life rich of experiences, good, bad, and all that's in between. A symbiont can have many hosts and I am only on my 2nd. There are some on their 8th or even 9th hosts. " Aze replied.
"Thats a long life" Parker smiled. "And you have the memories of the hosts?"
"That`s correct. The new host retains the memories, experiences and sometimes inherits the tastes and mannerisms of the previous hosts. I, for example, now have scientifc knowledge and experience of Torbin Vox."
"Must make for great dreams" Parker said with a smile.
Their session eventually ended. Vox headed back to the bridge, whereas Parker checked their diary for their next appointment.
