753 words; about a 4 minute read
Mission:
Mission 1: A Fool’s Errand
Location: Deck 5: Captain's Quarters
Timeline: M1 MD01 (2268.15.05) 1300
The gentle glow of the computer console filled the Captain's Cabin onboard the U.S.S. Midway, the newest Constitution class starship. The air was filled with the aria from Carmen known commonly as the “Toreador” song. A young man, the Captain, was lying on the bed, boots and all, his eyes closed and his hands resting on his chest when the computer chirped:
"Computed and recorded, dear…"
The Captain's eyes snapped open and grumbled. He had read the manual twice and still could not remove the sultry personality from his computer terminal. It was no doubt some joke at his expense from the yard engineers.
A dashboard of the latest status reports and computation of their expected launch flashed across the screen.
The chime at the captain's door rang. On the other side stood a blonde haired woman dressed in science blue holding a digital clipboard. Her hazel eyes full of determination as she stood waiting to enter.
The Captain rubbed his eyes and then stood up. He hit the button to open the door, “Oh, come on in Commander,” Tristan responded before getting out of the way to let the young woman inside, “Need something?” he asked.
Lieutenant Commander Lucy Heartfilia shook her head simply. “Not really sir. I’m here to finalize the duty roster with you before we start final preparations to depart” she said simply holding out the clipboard. “We have received our flight plan and mission details also. The final supplies and fuel are being loaded as we speak” she paused for a few seconds.
“However, we are still waiting for some crew to arrive. Many are coming from other assignments” Lucy explained.
Tristan nodded and took the clipboard, “There should be a big red circle drawn around the Ship’s Surgeon,” he said with a sigh, “Still no word from Star Fleet Medical on who will fill that spot. Frankly, I am unwilling to leave dock without one.” He set the clipboard and set it down onto his desk. “It’s a problem to say the least,” he commented before looking back at her.
Lucy pondered for a few moments. “I can contact Starfleet Medical on your behalf sir. I share your concern, we do need a chief surgeon on board before we leave” she paused for a second. “Is the duty roster all confirmed for you Captain?” she asked.
“Please,” Tristan commented. He picked up the clipboard and nodded, “Looks like everything else is ship shape, but we’ll see how it works out in actuality. One idea… And please point out any impracticalities in this… But the day we launch I would like Alpha and Charlie shift on at the same time, this way the most experienced officers can pass along some of that experience to the least experienced. Beta shift will have to cover a few extra hours to compensate… If it works, we can do it periodically,” he said, thinking aloud.
“Aye Captain” Lucy replied as she took the clipboard. “I’ll have it sorted by the end of the day”
“Ok, excellent,” Tristan responded, “Anything else on your mind?” He found a cup of black coffee on the desk which was barely drinkable and took a sip.
"Only a few things," Lucy replied. "I was wondering, have you received our mission orders yet?" The young blonde asked curiously. "Also I heard that most of the Constitution classes were due a major refit in a few years, at least that's the rumor. It seems strange to me that if this is true they would build new ones to serve a short term" she explained.
“Our orders are to simply run the ship through her paces as soon as possible, then await instructions,” Tristan explained, “From the meetings I’ve been involved in, I am thinking it concerns the Tholians. Starfleet wasn’t satisfied with the Enterprise’s report on the loss of the Defiant.” He set his cup of coffee back onto the desk, “You need to remember the older ships, such as the Enterprise are over twenty years old and are due for periodic refits. Those ships have always been testbeds. I know if testing goes well, the Midway may receive new nacelles as early as two years from now.”
“Well, we’ll see what Starfleet has in store for us,” Lucy replied with a smile.
